Hardy’s Wessex Exhibition Curator Tour

Join us for a talking tour around Hardy’s Wessex: The Landscapes that Inspired a Writer with exhibition curator Harriet Still.

Event Description

“Hardy found his inspiration in the landscapes and people of Wessex, but he was also passionate about issues such as women’s equality, animal welfare and the unfairness of the English class system. As part of the project, I was tasked with exploring museum stores and archives to find objects that gave insights into Hardy’s complex personality. It was a magical voyage of discovery and it will be wonderful to share this fascinating treasure trove with our visitors.”

This is a chance to ask questions and find out more about Thomas Hardy and the objects on show.

Sawfish are also called carpenter sharks...but they are rays, not sharks!

There’s also a species called a sawshark, but that’s, well, a shark!

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

Road Runner!

The great bustard has a dignified slow walk but tends to run when disturbed, rather than fly.

Belly Buster!

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
