Fashioning Our World display opens at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery

The Collections Showcase Display at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery highlights the collaborative Fashioning Our World project. A group of local young people worked closely with the museum team as part of this initiative, in partnership with The Salisbury Museum.

The group had the unique opportunity to delve into the costume and textile collection at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery, which is usually not accessible to the public. Throughout this project, the group learned new skills rooted in traditional techniques and created their own garments inspired by the collection, all while considering sustainable fashion choices.

The Fashioning Our World project was made possible by a grant from The Esmee Fairburn Collections Fund, delivered by the Museums Association, with additional support from Wessex Museums.

Visit the display 4 July – 6 September 2024.

Sawfish are also called carpenter sharks...but they are rays, not sharks!

There’s also a species called a sawshark, but that’s, well, a shark!

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

Road Runner!

The great bustard has a dignified slow walk but tends to run when disturbed, rather than fly.

Belly Buster!

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
