Hardy’s Wessex exhibition returns!

Hardy's Wessex graphic

Hardy’s Wessex: The landscapes that inspired a writer exhibition returns for a tour at Museum & Art Swindon.

Explore the landscapes that inspired Thomas Hardy, in this touring exhibition developed by Wessex Museums from the original exhibition that appeared simultaneously in four partner museums in 2022.

The exhibition explores the life and work of Victorian novelist and poet Thomas Hardy, set against the Wessex landscapes that inspired him. The exhibition brings together objects and documents exploring important themes in Hardy’s work, including women’s rights, animal welfare, social structure, superstitions, the realities of war, and altered relationships with the landscape. His story is retold in exciting new ways, from period costumes to personal letters, and from art to archaeology.

Hardy’s Wessex will be on display until 8 February 2025. More information and opening times can be found on Museum & Art Swindon’s website.

Sawfish are also called carpenter sharks...but they are rays, not sharks!

There’s also a species called a sawshark, but that’s, well, a shark!

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

Road Runner!

The great bustard has a dignified slow walk but tends to run when disturbed, rather than fly.

Belly Buster!

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
