Description

Summary: instantaneous light box in green moire metallique, made by Smart of the Strand, London. c.1830. hinged and contains matches, headed with chlorate of potash, sugar and gum, and glass bottle which contained sulphuric acid. Matches were dipped in bottle and caught light once removed into atmosphere.
