Museum & Art Swindon - Origins exhibition and MAS reception

Museum & Art Swindon opened its doors to the public on Tuesday 9 July 2024, at its new location in the Civic Offices in Euclid Street. The Civic Offices make the incredible collection of artwork and artefacts more accessible to more people. 


At the new, free-to-enter location visitors can enjoy 40% more exhibition space than before. This will allow Museum & Art Swindon to showcase more of its collection and create a welcoming environment for staff, volunteers, and researchers, presenting an opportunity to restart the volunteers’ programme. There is also a dedicated space for school trips, with a classroom and lunchroom. 

Opening exhibitions for the museum include:

  • Elisabeth Frink: A View from Within – supported by Wessex Museums through NPO funding.
  • Double Take – explores inspiration and creativity using artworks from the Museum & Art Swindon collection alongside works produced by 200 Swindon school children Pieces of Me – an exploration of identity through art, co-curated with young people from Swindon
  • Origins – an exhibition showcasing some of the diverse material collected by Museum & Art since its inception
  • The History of Swindon – galleries telling the history of Swindon from the Jurassic period up to today.

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
