Giant Stone Throwers

There’s only one thing that giants like more than throwing stones, and that’s a stone-throwing contest. One time on Henning Hill near Cheselbourne two giants threw larger and larger boulders, heaving them further and further, until, with the mightiest of throws, one of the giants threw a boulder so far that it flew right over Weymouth and landed in the sea. It’s still there today. We know it as the Isle of Portland. But the other giant was so disappointed that he dropped dead on the spot. The winning giant and their friends silently picked up a whole bevy of rocks and gently placed them over his body. The mound is still there, too – the Giant’s Grave.

Sawfish are also called carpenter sharks...but they are rays, not sharks!

There’s also a species called a sawshark, but that’s, well, a shark!

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

Road Runner!

The great bustard has a dignified slow walk but tends to run when disturbed, rather than fly.

Belly Buster!

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
