Wessex Museums Trust has announced that their CEO, Kristina Broughton, will be stepping down in April to take on a new role as Strategic Director for the International Council of Museum UK (ICOM UK). For a decade, Kristina has been a driving force behind the success of Wessex Museums, supporting it from its inception to become an innovative museums partnership and an independent organisation, with the purpose of supporting the Wessex partner museums to be more relevant and resilient.

During her tenure, Kristina led the work to set up Wessex Museums Trust as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. She also led two applications for National Portfolio Organisation funding from Arts Council England, securing awards for the partnership totalling more than £3m; including an uplift in the latest round having grown the partnership to include Swindon Museums. Under her leadership, Wessex Museums delivered impactful work in equity, diversity & inclusion, community engagement, and launched several innovative initiatives such as the Wessex Virtual Collections, the partnership’s first online talks and podcast series. She secured funding and oversaw the delivery of major partnership exhibitions, including Hardy’s Wessex and Un/Common People; which is currently on tour at Museum & Art Swindon.

Reflecting on her time with Wessex Museums, Kristina said, “Working together with these fabulous museums and so many wonderful colleagues for almost 10 years to create the innovative and values-led partnership that is Wessex Museums, has been a true honour and privilege. We’ve achieved some wonderful work together, not without its challenges, but always in the spirit of true collaboration, and at its heart, making our museums more relevant to more people. I wish Wessex Museums Trust continued success in its mission to support the museums to connect, inspire and add value to people’s lives.”

Gill Donnell MBE, Chair of the Wessex Museums Trust Board added, “I and the Wessex Museums Trust Board will miss Kristina immensely. She has been such a crucial figure in the partnership’s formation and continued development, driving forward our commitment to deliver for the community covered by our partner museums. Her strong leadership and innovative approach resulted in us securing two NPO awards and she leaves us in a strong position to continue in our mission. We all wish Kristina the very best in her new role and are confident she will continue to be a driving force in our sector.”

Sawfish are also called carpenter sharks...but they are rays, not sharks!

There’s also a species called a sawshark, but that’s, well, a shark!

What the heck is a lek?

Males great bustards perform spectacular courtship displays, gathering at a ‘lek’ or small display ground to try to impress the females.

Road Runner!

The great bustard has a dignified slow walk but tends to run when disturbed, rather than fly.

Belly Buster!

The hen-bird on display at The Salisbury Museum was one of the last great bustards to be eaten in the town!
